Pelosi: Dems won’t back tax breaks ‘disguised’ as infrastructure bill

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday reiterated a commitment to work with President-elect Donald Trump on a massive infrastructure package, but only under certain conditions.

Pelosi warned that her party would not back a proposal that only funnels money toward private investors that back transportation projects, which has so far been the cornerstone of Trump’s vision for infrastructure investments.

“We’d be willing to talk about an infrastructure bill,” Pelosi said during a news conference, adding, “As long as it’s a real infrastructure bill that builds the infrastructure of America, creates good-paying jobs, increases the paycheck of American workers and is not a tax break at the high-end, disguised as an infrastructure bill.”

“We have our standards about cooperating,” she said.

{mosads}Shortly after Trump’s electoral win, Pelosi and other Democrats identified infrastructure as one of the few areas where they may compromise with the incoming administration.

But Democrats have since cautioned that they need to see more than just private-sector money being used to pay for transportation upgrades in the proposal.

Trump has not sketched out his plan in detail yet, but a proposal he floated on the campaign trail would offer $137 billion in federal tax credits to private firms that back transportation projects.

While Trump doesn’t need the support of Democrats in the House to move legislation, he’ll still need some Democratic support in the Senate, where it takes 60 votes to pass legislation.

However, Democrats may not be the only lawmakers that Trump will need to woo. He could also face some opposition from fiscal conservatives who are reluctant to back massive federal spending on infrastructure.
