Turner Field Redevelopment Given Green Light

While the miserable Atlanta Braves have little hope of making it to postseason action, Turner Field officially has big plans come fall.

According to Atlanta INtown, the Atlanta City Council has approved the land conveyance of the stadium and former site of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium to GSU and developer Carter. Late last year, the city selected the duo's ideas to redevelop this section of the Summerhill neighborhood from among three proposals.

Recently, three schemes designed by Perkins+Will emerged as tantalizing possibilities for what could come in the next few years. But while the deal seems to be a relative home run (so long, parking lots), not everyone has been thrilled.

Since the Braves' exodus was first announced, neighbors in Summerhill, Mechanicsville, and Pittsburgh have advocated for involvement in the future of the site. Politicians and university officials say they have, and will continue to, provide for ample community input.

The land conveyance will allow for serious discussions about the site to move forward — presumably with community members involved — with GSU and Carter now officially slated to be the new owners as soon as the season ends. The playoffs can't come soon enough.
